Intuitive Chaos
Larry Ellingson
October 4th - 26th, 2013

Larry Ellingson’s art centers around “orphans” (objects removed from their original context) carefully yet carelessly united with other “orphans” in a new world of intuitive chaos.  This show includes Four Voices, a light and music construction, several photographic “pile on” assemblages, clothing accessories for 100 foot tall people and many brand new pieces.  ”I don’t get it, but I can’t stop looking at it,” a bemused onlooker said.

Workshop held by Spokane Art School

Learn watercolor techniques suited for the outdoors in the beautiful restored gardens of Moore-Turner located in Spokane’s lower South Hill.  Create beautiful and dynamic foliage, with vibrant greens, and vivid colors that have the contrast and intensity of the plants and the environment that you are seeing.  This workshop will explore the entire spectrum of the artist’s palette using warm and cool colors, mixing them with adjoining colors; how to use complementary colors to balance each other to achieve rich and realistic volumes; how to create 3-D forms using shape making and color; how to establish a mood or atmosphere; how to impart a richness of color by juxtaposing multiple colors.  Ken will give an introduction about color, demonstrate masking, scratching through, painting negative spaces within negative spaces, and other special techniques to achieve bold and believable results.

This workshop is open to participants who are high school age and older.  Watercolor experience is helpful but not necessary.   If you have experience with watercolor, bring your own supplies that you are used to using, including paper.  If you have little or no experience and need supplies, see Materials List.  You will also want to bring a water container, a camp stool, a broad brimmed hat, and appropriate attire for working outside.  Sunglasses and sunscreen are a must.

About the artist…..Ken Spiering is internationally known for his diverse mediums and techniques including illustrations, watercolors and oil paintings, woodblock prints and etchings, carved wood, cast bronze, concrete and steel sculptures, copper enamels, as well as many monumental public art works.  His work is in collections throughout the world, and he has been an instructor of art at selected universities, public and private schools.
