Watercolor Workshop at the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens with Ken Spiering

Plan to join our group of experienced watercolor painters at the historic Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens on the basalt hillside behind the Corbin House at 525 West 7th Avenue for two days of plein-aire painting. Providing subject matter and inspiration are the profusion of colors and textures of flowers and foliage in their gorgeous setting among basalt outcroppings. Providing instruction and guidance in the craft of watercolor will be Ken Spiering, promising to keep critiques gentle and to the point. And hopefully you will bring your tools, materials and experience in watercolor to take this opportunity to celebrate creativity with us.

Some specific techniques Spiering wishes to address are:

seeing and using complementary colors even in the subtle

             enrichment of colors

             achieving credible textures

             use of strong contrasts

positive and negative space painting to achieve layering of foliage

timing your washes and the saturation of your colors

decisive and deft handling of your brush

and adjusting focus for emphasis of subject (and that is NOT hitting the bar for Happy Hour).

Travis Masingale - "Foundations"

Foundations

My work is influenced by technology, philosophy, communication and memory. I tend to walk the line that exist between subjective/objective argument. I’m interested in how things work, learning about them, and teaching it to others. My work is a direct reflection of where I’ve been, a memory of who I am, and who I want to be. Instruction, mutation, chaos, and information are concepts that I cultivate and grow. Moving towards a destination that is discovered rather than guided is the method and practice I prefer. I am inspired by works that are at the fringe of the art making world, by anything new that must fight for the right to be. Discreet packets of data that I call time and the sensuous space they seem to inhabit speak for my attention. The correlation of human memory to that of the machines memory seems to be a guiding force in my work, differentiating what memories are and what exists.
